Why hire a lawyer with a CDL after a semi-truck crash?

On Behalf of | Nov 30, 2023 | Truck Accidents |

Those involved in a major crash often need help afterward. Particularly if people lose a family member or suffer catastrophic injuries in a collision, they may need assistance obtaining compensation for their losses. Many people involved in collisions hire lawyers when negotiating with insurance professionals or preparing a personal injury lawsuit. The bigger and more serious the crash is, the greater the need for outside support.

Those involved in a crash caused by a semi-truck could have particularly significant losses. The claims process can also be more challenging than what people experience after crashes involving two passenger vehicles. Hiring a lawyer who is experienced in handling truck crash cases and who has a commercial driver’s license (CDL) can be beneficial.

How could a CDL help a lawyer manage a personal injury lawsuit?

The right training provides a better perspective

Operating a semi-truck or other commercial vehicle requires specialized knowledge, skill, and training.  Commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) are bigger, heavier, slower to accelerate, take more time and distance to stop and turn, and therefore, operate much differently than a typical passenger vehicle.

To operate a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,0001 pounds or more, a driver must have a CDL, which requires applicants to demonstrate that they have not only the knowledge, but the skills necessary to operate a CMV safely.

The operation of a CMV is also subject to special rules and regulations. CMV drivers and the companies they work for are required to know and follow these rules and regulations. Knowing the rules, regulations and standards governing the operation of CMVs is important in the assessment and handling of crashes in which a CMV (such as a tractor-trailer, dump truck, bus, etc.) is involved.

Our firm has multiple lawyers who have completed the specialized training to operate a CMV and obtained their Class A CDLs, in an effort to better represent our clients.  We have years of experience handling cases involving CMVs and our record speaks for itself.
