Woman charged in fatal motorcycle crash

West Virginia drivers know it is essential to obey all road safety laws when operating a vehicle. Unfortunately, some drivers endanger others by disregarding basic road rules. For example, a Minnesota woman is facing multiple charges for allegedly causing a car crash that killed a 60-year-old motorcyclist in August.

According to authorities, the victim was riding his motorcycle along State Highway 37 on August 29 when the 19-year-old defendant turned her Hyundai Sonata in front of him at County Road 7. The motorcycle struck the car, and the victim was thrown from his bike. Emergency crews found him a significant distance from his motorcycle, and he was transported to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

The woman told responding officers that she turned in front of the victim because she believed he was also going to turn his motorcycle. However, a crash investigation found that the motorcycle's turn signal had not been activated prior to the crash. The defendant has been charged with failure to yield, careless driving and driving without insurance. She is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 5.

Following a fatal motorcycle accident, police officers generally conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. An injured victim can use a crash investigation report to file a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver. Possible damages awarded in such a case include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. If the victim dies in the crash, their next of kin can use the report to file a wrongful death lawsuit. If the suit is successful, the family could receive a settlement that pays for funeral expenses, loss of income and more.
