Safe driver week coming in October

Working with law enforcement agencies in West Virginia and across the country, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance will hold its safe driver week from Oct. 16 to 22. During that week, law enforcement agencies across the country will step up enforcement of traffic laws while also engaging in educational efforts about safe driving behaviors.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, poor driving behavior causes 88 percent of large truck crashes and 93 percent of crashes involving passenger vehicles. This has led to the creation of the safe driver program, which will be focused on reducing the incidence of crashes and poor driving behaviors.

Officers will be enforcing traffic laws for both commercial vehicles and passenger cars. They will be looking for such things as speeding, improperly changing lanes, following too closely, failing to wear seat belts, distracted driving and failing to obey traffic control signals, among other things. People are able to learn more about the enforcement activities that will be taking place by calling their local law enforcement agencies.

When poor driving behaviors lead to semi-truck accidents, people who are involved in the collisions have much greater chances of being catastrophically injured. They may want to consider filing personal injury lawsuits. When a commercial driver is at fault in causing an accident while he or she is working, his or her employer may also be held to be responsible as a defendant in a resulting lawsuit. A personal injury attorney may analyze the facts in order to determine all of the appropriate defendants that should be named.
