Autonomous cars and accident liability

Ready or not, autonomous cars are coming to West Virginia and the rest of the United States. The Mercedes-Benz S550 already features semi-autonomous abilities, and Tesla began testing its self-driving car this summer. Google is also testing autopilot cars, and Apple is rumored to be developing its own autonomous car.

Public service ad campaign aimed at teen drivers

New public service ads on television and online will remind teenagers in West Virginia that drinking and driving is the 'ultimate party foul." On Oct. 19, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Ad Council announced that they were launching a nationwide public service campaign in honor of National Teen Driver Safety Week.

Tennis star sues USTA over U.S. Open accident

Tennis fans in West Virginia likely recall Eugenie Bouchard's performance at Wimbledon in 2014 when she reached the women's singles final. The 21-year-old Canadian was once ranked fifth in the world before a Sept. 4 accident at the U.S. Open. Bouchard slipped and fell in a physiotherapy room at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and she filed a lawsuit against the United States Tennis Association in a federal court in New York on Oct. 14 seeking unspecified monetary damages.

Car accidents still a significant fatality risk

West Virginia ranks sixth among states where motor vehicle fatalities are most common at a rate of 17.8 per 100,000 people. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that overall, deaths from automobile accidents have declined significantly in the last three years. This is part of an overall decline that has been ongoing since 1985 and is attributed in part to better safety features and structural design.

Researchers say inflammation key to degenerative brain problems

West Virginia residents who have friends or family members that have suffered brain injuries might be interested in the findings of university researchers regarding chronic brain degenerative problems and the nature of traumatic injuries to the brain. Specifically, two University of Maryland researchers found that the problems that develop following a traumatic brain injury are due more to inflammation of and around the brain than they are due to acute trauma.

Man files suit after suffering brain injury at park

West Virginia residents may have heard about a man who suffered a brain injury while at a San Francisco park run by the National Park Service. He has filed a lawsuit against the United States government, the National Park Service, the Department of the Interior and San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

Energy drinks linked brain injuries in teens

West Virginia parents may be surprised to learn that the consumption of energy drinks may be linked to traumatic brain injuries in teenagers. According to a study published in a peer-reviewed journal, teens who incurred a traumatic brain injury within the previous 12 months were more than seven times more likely to have consumed five or more energy drinks in the prior week than those without a history of brain injuries.
