Are motorcycle fatalities on the rise in West Virginia?

Motorcycle accidents and fatalities are still very much a problem in West Virginia. Even though the state tends to have a lower number of deaths than some other states, the fact of the matter is that there are still people killed on the roadways every single year.

A first: injured people in wreck with Google self-driving car

For a few years now, the whole world has been enamored with the idea that, someday soon, we will have cars that drive themselves. This idea has been pushed further by Google, which has been working to create self-driving cars for some time now. They have been openly operating these vehicles in California, testing them for weaknesses and drawbacks. While the testing has gone swimmingly for the most part, recently the Google self-driving car ran into some problems.

The risk of vehicle cyber attacks proven real with video

If someone asked you to operate a vehicle that you knew could be hacked and controlled by someone else, would you do it? Probably not if you're like a lot of people here in West Virginia. But in the name of research and the promotion of cyber security, that's exactly what one journalist for the tech website Wired did recently.

Dangers of cargo tank rollovers

All too often in West Virginia, people are injured when a cargo tank rolls over on the highway. Many such accidents are preventable, but they still occur. According to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration statistics, more than 1,300 such rollover accidents occur every year across the country.

How brain injuries affect learning

Families in West Virginia may benefit from learning more about why children recover from brain injuries at different rates. According to researchers at USC and UCLA, the damage inflicted upon the fatty sheaths encasing nerve fibers in the brain are the most delineating factor, not the severity of the injury itself. In order to gauge how participants recalled and processed information after a head trauma or concussion, the study became the first to combine recordings of the electrical activity within the brain and imaging scans.

What factors are considered with a premises liability claim?

When someone is injured on another person's or company's property, the victim will likely consider legal action in the form of a premises liability lawsuit. These are complex claims, even though to the injured party the incident may seem straightforward. But there are many things to consider about these lawsuits.

When your car accident is the road's fault

Potholes. Poorly displayed signage. Broken lighting. These safety hazards and a host of additional road-related safety hazards often contribute to auto accidents. If you have been in an auto accident and road conditions contributed to that accident, you obviously cannot sue the road in question for damages. However, you may be able to hold other entities responsible for any physical harm or property damage resulting from the accident.

Car, truck collide in South Carolina; 2 people killed

A tragic motor vehicle accident in South Carolina claimed two lives after a car and an 18-wheeler collided. The wreck occurred because two young men, a 27-year-old and a 22-year-old, were in the smaller vehicle which ran a stop sign. The vehicle was struck by the much larger truck and the two men inside the vehicle were killed. Police don't believe that charges will be filed in the accident, though that doesn't make it any less tragic.

Out for a motorcycle ride on a summer Saturday? Take extra care

If you're a motorcycle enthusiast, you've probably noticed that motorcycling is growing ever more popular in the U.S. West Virginia's roads are spectacular for riding, but that doesn't mean you don't have to drive carefully -- and there may be more issues to watch out for than usual.

When guardrails fail, lives can be lost

You may not realize it but there are a number of elements present in our roadways that make them safer. Everything from a roadway's design to its surface helps reduce hazardous conditions that could otherwise lead to an accident. But if any of these elements fail, instead of preventing accidents, they could be the reason for them.

Avoiding drunk driving accidents this holiday weekend

Although it is always important for motorists to avoid drinking and driving, it is perhaps particularly important that they avoid this hazardous behavior during high-traffic weekends. No matter when a motorist intentionally or unintentionally drives while legally drunk, that motorist risks the safety of himself or herself, as well as anyone else the motorist comes into contact with while traveling. During high-traffic weekends, a drunk motorist is likely to encounter a higher volume of travelers than normal and will put each of them at risk of being injured or killed in an accident.

Riders need to protect themselves in dangerous weather

Motorcyclists have to deal with unsavory road conditions on nearly every trip. From road debris to inattentive drivers, riders can find themselves in danger at every turn. Due to the lack of safety equipment, bikers need to remain constantly aware of their surroundings to prevent serious accidents.
