Truck tire blowouts can be deadly

While tire technology has improved in numerous ways in recent decades, tire blowouts can still occur. In fact, it can be argued that their rarity only increases the hazards that a blown tire represents.

Truckers have logged millions of miles on the nation's highways. Unfortunately, this wear-and-tear wreaks havoc on the tires that bear the brunt of the work. An under-inflated tire or an unbalanced load can put undue pressure on a truck tire and ultimately lead to a blowout. Tire blowouts, whether caused by outside factors or defects in the manufacturing process, can cause a truck driver to lose control and destroy any other vehicle in its path.

Due to their size and speed, 18-wheelers are likely to cause the most devastating accidents on the road. Whether the accident is caused by driver fatigue, faulty safety equipment or a tire blowout, the impact can be deadly.

A truck tire blowout can be dangerous in three different types of situations:

  1. The truck driver experiences a blowout and loses control of the vehicle. The loss of control can lead to swerving as the driver attempts correct the movement of the vehicle - often over-correcting and veering into lanes of traffic.
  2. The blown tire shreds and throws rubber in all different directions. It is not uncommon for large pieces of tire rubber to strike other vehicles, destroying windshields or knocking out headlights.
  3. Another driver runs over the pieces of rubber that are laying flat on the road surface. Hitting this debris can lead to a loss of control, or even a tire blowout on the new vehicle.

Any of these situations can lead to catastrophic injuries and devastating property damage. Numerous other factors can precipitate serious accidents - inclement weather or poorly lit roads, for example. If you or a loved one was injured in an accident caused by a tire blowout, schedule a consultation with an experienced personal injury attorney to discuss your options for monetary compensation.
