All accident scars may not be physical in nature - Part I

We recently began a discussion entitled “Why the Tracy Morgan truck accident settlement matters.” During that discussion, we observed that the settlement which was recently reached in the accident case involving Tracy Morgan serves as an excellent illustration of an important point. The media likes to report on cases that are particularly contentious and that result in significant jury awards. However, the majority of cases do not result in a jury verdict. The majority of cases, including the Tracy Morgan accident case, settle. And settlement does not render these cases any less important than those which end in a jury verdict.

Another reason why the Tracy Morgan accident case illustrates an important point is that the injured actor has spoken out about a reality that many motor vehicle accident victims face. Morgan recently made an appearance on the “Today” show. During that appearance, he admitted that he is still dealing with challenging emotional scars related to the crash.

The accident that resulted in Morgan’s critical injuries and head trauma also resulted in the death of one of Morgan’s friends. On Today, Morgan observed that “Bones heal, but the loss of my friend will never heal."

Accidents can cause psychological trauma, injuries and scars just as they can cause these kinds of physical challenges. Whether accident victims struggle with loss, flashbacks, anger or a host of other psychological challenges, it is important for them to understand that these realities are normal and can generally be treated. Please check back later this week as we will continue our discussion on this important topic in a future post.
