New research sheds light on motorcycle accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 18, 2020 | Motorcycle Accidents |

For motorcycle enthusiasts, the arrival of spring is an exciting time. West Virginia is warming up, and all across the state, riders look forward to getting the bike out to enjoy the nice weather. Modern motorcycles are considered less dangerous than their predecessors, thanks to technological advances and safety initiatives that raise public awareness. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents are still a very real threat, and a group of researchers recently shared some surprising facts.

One may think it is safe to assume that, in the event of a serious motorcycle accident, speed, inclement weather or another contributing factor played a part. While this can be the case, researchers say that most motorcycle crashes occur during the daytime when visibility and road conditions are good. There is also no obvious correlation between motorcycle speed at the time of the crash and severity of injury suffered by a rider.

The study showed that, in many cases, another driver was often the cause of a crash that results in serious injury or death to a motorcyclist. Even if the driver of a motorcycle was traveling at a safe speed in accordance with traffic laws, a rider who becomes entangled with a larger vehicle is potentially in grave danger. People should not assume that, just because motorcycles look and sound fast and loud, a crash was caused by a careless rider — and, in all actuality, a motorcycle rider is often the victim.

When a person becomes the victim of a crash in West Virginia, he or she may want to explore options for legal recourse against the party who caused the wreck. Motorcycle accidents can result in permanent physical injury, expensive damage to personal property, emotional distress and other misfortunes that cause stress to an already injured victim. In such cases, a victim may want to reach out to an experienced attorney to assist with each step of the legal process.
