What to do immediately after a motorcycle accident

Motorcyclists in West Virginia should know that certain steps must be taken in the wake of an accident with someone else. Staying calm, as difficult as it may be, is generally the best policy. If a motorcyclist can fulfill the following steps smoothly and with an attention to detail, it will be a lot easier for them when they file their claim with their insurance company.

First, a motorcyclist should see who, if anyone, was hurt and call an ambulance if the injuries are serious. Second, they must call the police or have a bystander do so if they cannot. The two parties involved in the crash should exchange contact information and ask this of any witnesses, too. Witnesses should remain at the scene until they can make a short statement to the police.

The police will then conduct their investigation, and everyone is expected to cooperate. There should be no arguments with those who disagree with one's own version of events. Afterward, motorcyclists who have not suffered severe injuries may want to undergo a medical exam just in case.

As part of their insurance claim, the motorcyclist may be asked for an estimate on bike repairs. Besides obtaining the estimate (preferably in writing), it is a good idea to keep detailed records of all medical expenses.

Motorcycle accidents can occur because of defective motorcycle parts or due to the negligence of a motorist. If the motorcyclist is innocent, they can file a third-party insurance claim or a claim against the maker of that defective part. Whatever the situation, they may want to talk with an attorney about the process. The attorney could negotiate for a settlement, litigating if one isn't achieved.
