Why motorcycles can be dangerous to ride

Those who ride motorcycles in West Virginia are more likely to be in an accident than those driving in a car. This is according to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety data from 2013. The study found that for every mile traveled, a motorcycle was 26 times more likely to get into a fatal crash compared to a passenger vehicle. There are several reasons why this may be the case.

First, some riders are not experienced or responsible enough to ride safely. However, the design of a motorcycle could put even experienced and responsible riders at a disadvantage. As a motorcycle only has two wheels, it can be harder to balance and stay upright. Furthermore, the size of a motorcycle can make it harder to see, which could increase the risk of a collision. As riders lack the protection afforded to those in cars, an accident is more likely to result in serious injury or death.

It is unlikely that the safety technology found in vehicles would help a motorcyclist. This is because it may not be possible to check a rear camera or respond to a lane departure warning. Therefore, riders are limited to the protection offered by larger mirrors, air bags and brighter lights to help improve their visibility at night.

Motorcycle accidents may happen for a variety of reasons, and in some cases, they are caused by the negligence of a rider, driver or another party. For instance, a drunk driver would be negligent for operating a vehicle while impaired. Those who are distracted or tired while operating a motor vehicle could also be negligent in doing so. If they cause an accident, they may be liable for the medical bills and other damages that a victim or victims incur as a result.
