Accident with an uninsured driver? What to do next

You always want to take specific steps after a car accident. You certainly do not want to hide in a restroom like one West Virginia man did after causing a multi-car accident that involved a bus.

After a car accident, you need to swap insurance information with the other driver. In the event the other driver does not have auto insurance, which happens, you may be at a loss for what to do next. This is why insurance companies offer uninsured driver coverage, which provides you with compensation if you ever get into a severe accident with an uninsured driver. It will be a tremendous help, but a lot of West Virginia drivers do not have it. If you fall into that category, then you need to follow strict instructions in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

File a police report

You should call the police after an auto accident, no matter what. However, it becomes even more important when one driver lacks insurance. A police report can help get all resulting expenses covered. It will make the claims process with your insurance company go smoother because you have detailed evidence to back up your testimony.

Do not take any cash

Because the other driver does not have insurance, he or she may offer you cash at the scene in an attempt to smooth everything over. The problem with this is that you do not know what your total expenses are yet. You may not even know whether you have sustained any injuries. When you take money at the scene, you compromise your ability to get money from your insurance agency later.

Get contact information

You may not have the driver's insurance information to give to your agency, but you can at least provide his or her contact information. Get a name, phone number and other pertinent details, so your insurance agency can at least talk to the other driver.
