Avoiding accidents in bright conditions

Rain and snow may make driving dangerous, but they're not the only types of hazardous weather. In the early morning and late afternoon, drivers in West Virginia can find themselves being blinded by the sun's rays. This compromising of vision can increase one's chances of getting in a car accident.

In 2017, a study published in the journal Medicine stated that drivers are 16 percent more likely to be in a fatal crash during bright sunlight than in normal conditions. Researchers found that bright sunlight not only creates glare but also causes visual illusions that could contribute to poor judgment of distance. However, there are several steps that drivers can take to reduce their chances of getting in a crash.

For example, it's important to regularly clean the windshield, which can become stained with road grime, water spots and dead insects. However, one should never engage the windshield washer nozzle when facing the sun. Another basic step is to observe the speed limit and give the car in front plenty of space. Drivers are advised to use the sun visor.

If possible, drivers could change their commute routes so that they are not heading into the sun every morning and evening. They may also consider investing in a pair of sunglasses with lenses that reduce glare, UV rays and blue light. In extreme cases where the glare is unavoidable, drivers should pull over.

When the negligent actions of drivers injure pedestrians, bicyclists and other motorists, third-party insurance claims may be in order. A victim could first have their claim evaluated by an auto accident attorney. Lawyers usually have access to investigators who can help gather evidence. Legal counsel could also handle negotiations and litigation.
