Every year, West Virginia commercial vehicles, drivers and companies are inspected during the three-day International Roadcheck. The 2018 effort, which is scheduled to take place from June 5 to June 7, will focus on hours-of-service compliance.

Roughly 15 buses and trucks will be inspected every minute across the nation during the three-day event. During the vehicle and driver checks, the inspectors perform Level 1 inspections, which are particularly thorough. In 2017 alone, inspectors issued 15,000 out-of-service orders after conducting more than 63,000 commercial trucks and busses. About 12,000 of these orders were for violations associated with the commercial vehicles while the remaining 3,000 orders were for violations associated with the drivers.

According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, which runs the Roadchecks each year, hours-of-service violations was the top reason drivers were placed out of service last year. In December 2017, an electronic logging device rule went into effect. Therefore, the CVSA believes that the 2018 Roadchecks will be the right time to shine a light on just how important these regulations can be.
