Crashes with tractor-trailers cause more than just bodily harm

It is no surprise that auto accidents with tractor-trailers are dangerous for those in passenger vehicles. Commercial trucks are huge, heavy and often full of cargo, leading to serious injuries for crash victims. Injuries often include traumatic brain injuries, organ damage, lacerations and broken bones.

Unfortunately, bodily harm is not the only consequence you can face after an accident with a semi. There is also likely to be damage to your vehicle and your emotional well-being.

Property damage

You can say goodbye to your vehicle after a collision with a tractor-trailer. Most likely it will not be fixable, and even if it is, you will be without a car during its repair. Using public transportation or a rental car in the meantime will cost you extra as well. Your insurance should cover property damage (including valuable items in your car), but you may also be able to pursue compensation from the responsible party as part of a personal injury lawsuit.

Emotional trauma

Harm to body and property are obvious consequences of an accident, but one less obvious one is the effects the incident has on your emotional health. Being in a car accident is quite frightening and can lead to the following:

  • Anxiety: You may not want to drive for a while and may be fearful when behind the wheel.
  • Depression: The physical injuries you suffer may cause depression due to major life adjustments.
  • Guilt: Even if you were not at fault for the accident, you still may blame yourself.
  • PTSD: Flashbacks of the accident can occur.
  • Sleep problems: The emotional turmoil you feel may make it difficult to fall asleep or could cause nightmares.

These, in turn, can lead to further issues, such as moodiness, social withdrawal and weight loss. You could require counseling to work through the fear, anger and sadness you experience. You may also benefit from taking defensive driving courses to feel confident on the road again and from practicing meditation to manage negative emotions. In some cases, you might be able to receive financial awards for your pain and suffering.
