Eye movements can help to diagnose brain injury

Many West Virginia residents have suffered brain injuries. These can be some of the most devastating types of trauma for both the victim and their loved ones. Faster and more accurate detection of head trauma can help doctors to provide proper treatment and therapies to best assist a patient.

These types of injuries are frequently the result of accidents, whether workplace injuries, slips and falls or auto crashes. Researchers have revealed that eye movements and tracking of the eyes may be key in detecting and diagnosing a brain injury. Many victims have reported difficulties with vision and eye tracking following their trauma.

Eye movements, muscles and vision may appear to be fully functional on initial testing.. However, for some people, compensatory mechanisms for trauma can degrade ocular acuity. A technology called EyeBOX is used to measure elevated intracranial pressure and its relation to eye tracking. Concussions and other forms of head injuries can disrupt the movement of the eye due to this elevated pressure as well as affecting neurological pathways.

While over 98 percent of people's eyes move together, as many as 90 percent of people who have suffered a brain injury have issues with their eye movement and tracking. Testing eye tracking can help to determine who has simply hit their head or who has suffered a trauma that requires more extensive rehabilitation and treatment.

For people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury due to the negligence of another party, seeking legal help may also be critically important. Treatment can be lengthy and expensive, and acting quickly can bring about a major difference in outcomes. A personal injury lawyer can help brain trauma sufferers to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages and future costs from the party responsible for the injury.
