Important points to remember after a car crash

Drivers on West Virginia roadways have to deal with the reality of car accidents on a regular basis. Those who are involved in the crashes do not expect them, though. Because of their unpredictable nature, it’s important to prepare in advance as much as possible. Drivers should know what to do in the event one happens.

The first step following any motor vehicle accident is to check for injuries. The driver and any passengers involved should remain calm and determine whether anyone is hurt. Emergency care should be contacted. If an injury has impaired the mobility of an individual, he or she should not be moved except by medical personnel.

The vehicles involved in the collision should be moved out of the way of traffic onto the side of the road as soon as it is safe to do so. In a case where the accident results in injuries or significant damage, it may be a good idea to call the police. Police reports may not be admissible during court proceedings, but they may still offer leverage during settlement negotiations.

At a minimum, the drivers of the vehicles involved should exchange information. Among the important details that should be gathered from the other driver are his or her name, address and telephone number, as well as his or her insurance company’s contact information. Photos of the scene of the car accident and statements from witnesses may also prove valuable later. The relevant insurance companies should be contacted as soon as possible following the crash.

Motor vehicle accidents may result in serious physical injuries and expensive damage to vehicles. An individual who has been hurt in a crash caused by the negligence of another driver may want to consult an attorney to see how compensation can be sought.
