How to be a responsible host

West Virginia residents may be in the mood to host parties now that summer has near. However, it is important for them to do so in a manner that protects themselves and their guests regardless of how many people show up. In some cases, a home insurance policy may pay damages related to a broken piece of property or injuries suffered in a fall.

It may be a good idea to secure any items that may be vulnerable to damage before a party. Guests should also be informed about any pools or other high risk items that may be on a person's property. Furthermore, the guest list should be confined to people who the homeowner knows. and neighbors should be made aware of any party that takes place. A parking plan should be enacted to lower the risk of a guest parking illegally or damaging property while parking.

Hosts should also be aware of what is going on around them when serving alcohol. They should make sure that they limit their alcohol intake to ensure that they can monitor their guests. Alcohol should be taken away well before a party ends to decrease the odds of a guest driving home drunk. Minors under the age of 21 should never be served alcohol under social host laws.

If guests are hurt at a party, the property owner may be liable for their medical bills and related expenses under the theory of premises liability. This would be the case if the injury resulted from a dangerous or hazardous condition. Victims may want to meet with an attorney to discuss their particular case.
