Parents of teenagers in West Virginia may want to be aware of a report about teen drivers and injury accident statistics. The report was released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in May 2015, but the data is still relevant.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety looked at injury and fatality statistics for teen driving accidents between the ages of 15 and 19 from 1994 to 2013. It found that 66 percent of those injured and 67 percent of those killed in those accidents were others than the teen drivers. The report also revealed that almost 50 percent of those who were injured were riding in other cars, 17 percent were riding with the teenager and 2 percent were pedestrians or cyclists.

Of the people who were killed, almost 30 percent were in other cars, 27 percent were the teen drivers’ passengers and 10 percent were bicyclists or pedestrians. During 2013 alone, 2,927 people died in crashes with teen drivers and another 371,645 people were injured. The good news is that the injury and fatality crash numbers dropped substantially between 1995 and 2015, respectively falling by 51 percent and 56 percent.

People who are severely injured by a negligent driver of any age may be left with substantial costs, smaller incomes and permanently disabling conditions.
