Avoid these potentially fatal car seat mistakes - Part II

In our last post, we began a discussion about car seat safety. We noted that even the most safety-conscious parents in America can make safety-related missteps from time to time. This is why it is so important for parents of children under the age of 13 years to regularly review the latest car seat safety recommendations released by the government and other concerned organizations.

We noted in our last post that used car seats should be avoided. Even if a seller insists that a car seat complies with all current regulations and has never been involved in an accident, one cannot be sure of a car seat’s integrity at a glance. If you use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Find a Car Seat” tool on the agency’s website, you can find safe, new models that fit your child’s height, weight and age.

Safety manuals tend to accompany many purchases. Most often, consumers either throw these manuals away or tuck them inside a drawer somewhere for safekeeping. Once you purchase a safe, new car seat model, it is important to actually read the safety manual. It will serve as an important reference as you attempt to install and use the seat.

Finally, take care not to move your children to their next car seat too quickly. Car seat restrictions and regulations should be adhered to as strictly as possible in order to better ensure your child’s safety. It may be a pain to keep your child rear-facing or out of the front seat for so long, but these restrictions are instituted for good reason.
