Types of ankle injuries

West Virginia residents who suffer an ankle injury in a fall may have a long recovery period or could have permanent damage. There are a number of different types of injuries that may happen to the ankle. Three bones make up the ankle, and any of these could be fractured. Some ankle fractures might involve injury to the lower leg bone. This is the type of injury that might leave permanent limitations to the ankle's function.

Water park sued over brain-eating amoeba death

Thousands of West Virginia residents visit water parks each year, and they rely on park operators to do all that they reasonably can to prevent accidents, injuries and illnesses. An 18-year-old Ohio woman lost her life after coming into contact with a deadly amoeba during a visit to a North Carolina waterpark in June 2016, and her family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the park seeking damages in excess of $1 million. According to reports, the lawsuit was filed in Columbus on June 19.

Important points to remember after a car crash

Drivers on West Virginia roadways have to deal with the reality of car accidents on a regular basis. Those who are involved in the crashes do not expect them, though. Because of their unpredictable nature, it's important to prepare in advance as much as possible. Drivers should know what to do in the event one happens.

Researchers identify gender differences in TBIs

Many West Virginia armed forces veterans are aware of the traumatic brain injuries that explosions in war zones can inflict on military personnel. Uniformed Services University researchers have been studying the effect of head trauma on the neuroendocrine system and the differing responses of men and women, and the results will be presented at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society. The findings could improve care for veterans and apply to victims of car accidents and sports injuries too.

Rule will require more driver training

West Virginia truck drivers who receive their commercial driver's licenses after Feb. 7, 2020 will be trained under new regulations that have almost three years in which to take effect. The rule took effect on June 5 after a five-month delay as a result of an order by President Trump to review regulations.

The complications of amusement park liability

Amusement park rides across the United States attract millions of visitors each year. Most are looking for the thrill and inherent danger of high-speed roller coasters and plummeting water rafts. While these rides are fun, they present a very real risk of serious injury or death to riders, and accident liability is foremost on the minds of managers in the industry. It may also be prudent for West Virginia park visitors to have some idea of the potential issues in case an accident does occur.

Amputee survivor of building collapse receives $95.6 million

West Virginia residents who remember the 2013 building collapse in Philadelphia might approve of the $227 million settlement awarded to victims. The tragedy that killed seven people and injured 12 more involved a building under demolition falling on a one-story Salvation Army thrift store. The arbitrator chose to give the largest portion of the settlement, $95.6 million, to one victim in particular, a 55-year-old woman who suffered catastrophic injuries.

Annual truck inspection event focuses on load securement

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has planned another 72-hour International Roadcheck spree of inspections. West Virginia truck drivers will be subject to compliance checks, enforcement and educational reminders. To prevent the loss of cargo during transit, inspectors will focus heavily on load securement in this year's event.

Study looks at outcomes for mild TBI patients

West Virginia residents who experience mild traumatic brain injuries might need to see a specialist within six months. Otherwise, some of those people may experience an unfavorable outcome, according to a recent study that examined patients recruited at trauma centers between 2013 and 2015. Unlike most studies of its kind, this one differentiated between patients who were hospitalized and those who were not. This is significant because patients who are hospitalized tend to be more seriously injured. They also have different guidelines for follow-up care. Patients who are not hospitalized are generally only advised to seek recurring care if they have ongoing problems.

How to be a responsible host

West Virginia residents may be in the mood to host parties now that summer has near. However, it is important for them to do so in a manner that protects themselves and their guests regardless of how many people show up. In some cases, a home insurance policy may pay damages related to a broken piece of property or injuries suffered in a fall.
