Preventing car crashes in West Virginia

In 2016, the National Transportation Safety Board says that it wants to see a reduction in the number of fatigue-related crashes in America. It was one of 10 issues that were part of its Most Wanted list that was released on Jan. 13. Of those 10 priorities for the new year, four of them were also part of the list in 2015.

The holdovers included distracted and impaired driving and requiring medical fitness for duty. Among the new priorities for 2016 were strengthening occupant protection, improvements to rail transit oversight and completing rail initiatives like positive train control. The NTSB would also like to expand the use of recorders and make increased use of collision-avoidance technology in cars.

According to the National Safety Council president, pushing for collision-avoidance technology is part of a natural push toward smarter and safer cars, but she noted that there is a long way to go, as approximately 35,000 people die as a result of car crashes each year. The Most Wanted List is seen as a road map towards significantly reducing that number.

Those who have been injured in a car accident that was suspected to having been caused by the negligent driving of another motorist often face high medical bills and lengthy rehabilitation periods during which they are unable to return to work. A personal injury attorney can often pinpoint the responsibility for the accident by reviewing the official police investigation report, the testimony of eyewitnesses and other evidence. This can then form the basis of a personal injury lawsuit that would seek damages from the at-fault party.
