Avoiding drunk driving accidents this holiday weekend

Although it is always important for motorists to avoid drinking and driving, it is perhaps particularly important that they avoid this hazardous behavior during high-traffic weekends. No matter when a motorist intentionally or unintentionally drives while legally drunk, that motorist risks the safety of himself or herself, as well as anyone else the motorist comes into contact with while traveling. During high-traffic weekends, a drunk motorist is likely to encounter a higher volume of travelers than normal and will put each of them at risk of being injured or killed in an accident.

It is for this reason and many others that non-profit organizations and businesses are teaming up this holiday weekend in order to help ensure that motorists avoid drunk driving during Independence Day. Traditionally, Independence Day weekend is one of the deadliest of the year in terms of drunk driving accidents. For better and for worse, it is up to each individual to assume personal responsibility for reversing this trend.

If you happen to see a loved one or an acquaintance hopping into his or her vehicle this weekend after having a few too many drinks, you may want to remind that person that many police departments are heightening their presence on the roads this weekend. Even individuals who may not be terribly conscious of how their decisions could potentially affect others will likely be eager to avoid being arrested for drunk driving.

If all else fails, consider looking up free rides in your area for you or any loved ones who may be drinking. Numerous organizations tend to set up free rides in major metropolitan areas during high-traffic and high-DUI accident rate weekends.
